INSIDE TREK PICTURE COLLECTION
Gene at Kitt Peak
At the invitation of Richard Hoagland, Gene was invited to visit Kitt Peak National Observatory, southwest of Tucson, Arizona. The Observatory houses a number of telescopes, including the world's largest solar telescope. Here, circa 1975, Gene is presenting Dick with a "Flight Deck Certificate" -- actually a Lincoln Enterprises sale item that "welcomed" the designee aboard the starship Enterprise. Dick must have taken the honor quite seriously; at the time, he was science advisor to NASA, but has since become famous for challenging NASA to investigate the "face on Mars." Dick even tried to interest Gene in the concept, but Gene gave it a pass. Nevertheless, they had a continuing friendship, and Dick would often visit when he came to town. I had some interesting lunches with him myself, and Dick invited us to JPL for several of the "flyby" missions to the planets.
