Robert Heinlein Blood Drive
I was invited to speak at a convention in Salt Lake City in the late 1970s, that also featured the dean of science fiction writers, Robert Heinlein ,as a guest speaker. He wanted a copy of my book, Letters to Star Trek, and I wanted his autograph! After that, he and I (and his wife Ginnie) became friends. So how could I let him down when it came time for the Blood Drive (a tradition at all conventions attended by Robert, stemming from a time when donated blood had saved his life). George Takei was also a guest that weekend. He joined me at the blood drive and made me laugh so I wouldn't worry about giving blood (this was my first time).
